Bosch: Alternator goes the distance

The Bosch Group has announced that its ultra-premium Long Haul alternator for heavy-duty vehicles is designed to provide fleets with greater electrical power and efficiency both on the road and at idle. In keeping with today’s hotter running engines, the Long Haul is also designed to generate electrical power when under-hood temperatures reach as high as 125-deg. C.

"While the Long Haul Alternator produces the electrical power commercial vehicles need, it also saves fuel every mile it is driven, and fights under-hood heat," said Lee Reighart, group product manager, Starting and Charging Products for Bosch. “It's called the Long Haul because this alternator is built to go the distance.”

The Long Haul alternator produces 160 amps operating output, and 80 amps at idle. The higher charge rate at idle prolongs battery life by reducing deep cycling, Bosch explained Dual internal cooling fans are used to optimize air flow and help maintain the Long Haul's even temperature under all operating conditions.

A key feature is Bosch's Self Protection Regulator technology, which automatically reduces the alternator’s output to prevent failure when under-hood temperatures reach 125 deg. C. (257 deg. F.) Output returns to normal when the temperature drops below that threshold.

The Long Haul alternator is backed by Bosch's 24-month/250,000-mile warranty. It features Bosch-patented high-efficiency winding technology that uses 30% more copper than conventional replacement alternators, producing increased efficiency and fuel savings, Reighart stated. Exclusive long-life bearings combine specially heat-treated, long-life steel bearings with heat-resistant and water repelling lubricant to withstand wear for tens of thousands of miles.
