Contract Freighters, Inc. (CFI) has announced it will purchase 140 Cummins 2007 ISXZ engines with the Cummins particulate filter. The SmartWay-approved Cummins engine will help CFI leverage its power train to maximize efficiency and lower emissions, the company said.

"CFI joined the SmartWay Transport Partnership to ensure that we're part of a long-term solution toward reducing emissions and fuel consumption from trucking operations,” said Herb Schmidt, president of CFI, a Con-way company. "We are committed to providing our drivers with the best equipment available and selecting equipment that has minimum impact on our environment. CFI applauds Cummins for its SmartWay-approved engine.”

SmartWay Transport in a voluntary program created by the Environmental Protection Agency to work with the freight industry to reduce emissions.

CFI also announced it is seeking experienced team drivers for routes originating from Henderson, CO, into Washington, Texas, Oklahoma and California.

CFI said starting pay for these drivers will be 44 cents a mile as the company’s new pay package went into effect on Jan. 1, with opportunities to carry placarded loads for an extra three cents a mile and a guaranteed 24-hour period off each week. Drivers also get to choose between a brand new 2008 Kenworth T660 or 2008 Freightliner Cascadia trucks, the company added, noting that upgraded trucks are available on a first-come, first-served basis to new CFI driver teams.

To be eligible for these immediate opportunities, CFI said drivers must be experienced, have hazardous materials endorsement and live within a 50-mile radius of Henderson. The carrier noted the specific dedicated routes are between Henderson, CO, and Pasco, WA; Santa Fe Springs, CA; Abilene, TX; and Sapulpa, OK.
