Today marks the start of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) Brake Safety Week. The week, which runs through Sept. 19, is part of the organization’s Operation Air Brake Campaign dedicated to improving inspection, compliance, maintenance and performance of commercial-vehicle brakes.

“The American Trucking Assns. (ATA) supports CVSA’s effort to enhance knowledge, regulatory compliance and performance of commercial vehicle braking systems,” said ATA vp Dave Osiecki. “These initiatives help to improve safety on our nation’s highways.”

CVSA inspectors will conduct Level I and Brake-Only inspections as truckstops, weigh stations and other locations throughout North America. They will be joined by brake suppliers and industry partners.

Driver surveys will also be conducted and educational brochures distributed.

“Braking systems on commercial vehicles are critical and need consistent attention to ensure proper performance,” said Osiecki. “Increasing educational outreach through these types of initiatives will help drivers and mechanics effectively maintain these vital systems.”
