SmarTire, based in British Columbia, Canada, recently filed a patent application in the U.S. for an external valve sensor designed for use with its tire pressure monitoring system for commercial vehicles.

According to SmarTire, the sensors offer easier installation and maintenance over existing internal sensor products.

“SmarTire's external valve sensors will reduce the installation costs of tire-pressure monitoring systems and enable faster implementation for large fleets during retrofit in the aftermarket,” said David Warkentin, vp-of sales & marketing.

Release of the external sensors is expected to take place sometime during the second quarter of 2007.
