The first EPA2010-certified truck from the Volvo Trucks North America production line has been delivered to Talon Logistics. The Volvo VN Daycab tractor is powered by a Volvo D13 diesel using selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to meet the new Federal emissions requirements that take effect in January.

The transportation division of the Giant Eagle supermarket chain, Talon has been working with VTNA to field test SCR for seven years, according to the truck maker. It has also been running test trucks with engines meeting the EPA 2010 emissions levels since Sept. 2007.

“Sustainability and dynamic energy management are two components of Giant Eagle’s environmental commitment,” said Bill Parry, vp of logistics for Giant Eagle. “That includes operating the cleanest and most fuel-efficient trucks, and helping to develop these technologies. Our work with Volvo demonstrated that SCR is effective and reliable, and we expect to benefit from that experience with our new Volvo VNs.”

Last week VTNA and its sister company Mack Trucks announced that they were the first truck manufacturers to receive certification from the EPA that their heavy-duty diesel engines meet the new emissions regulations. Based on prescribed testing conducted by the manufacturers and submitted to the EPA, certification is the last step in a long development process and is required for all diesels built after Jan. 1. Most, if not all diesel manufacturers are expected to obtain EPA10 certification for their engines by the beginning of the new year.
