Rostra Precision Controls says its RearSentry rear-obstacle sensing system is now available for use on Class 7 and 8 trucks. The system, originally developed for lighter-duty vehicles, uses a microwave signal to detect obstacles up to 12 ft behind the truck.

Laurinburg, NC-based Rostra says RearSentry alerts the driver of potential danger with a series of audible beeps that increase in intensity as well as with an in-cab LED display that changes from green to yellow to red as objects become closer.

Unlike other rear-detection systems that use infrared waves or video cameras, according to Rostra, the RearSentry's microwave technology is unaffected by weather or lighting conditions, continuing to “see” obstacles in rain, sleet, snow, darkness, or even mud.

“Our RearSentry acts as a second set of eyes for the driver,” noted Ron Hudnell, executive vp-marketing & sales, “allowing for confident and safe backing in a variety of settings.”

The system is compatible with conventional or cabover trucks and can be used with pup trailers ranging in length from 32 to 38 ft. and semi-trailers up to 53 ft.

Rostra says the unit is manufactured with heavy-duty die cast metal plugs for multiple quick connects and disconnects.
