The first five Volvo VN day cabs equipped with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology were recently presented to Talon Logistics by Volvo Trucks North America for field testing as the OEM prepares for 2010 emissions regulations.

“This is a milestone in achieving cleaner air, while delivering the fuel economy, reliability and performance our customers demand,” said Peter Karlsten, president & CEO of Volvo Trucks North America. “We know from Volvo’s experience in other markets that SCR is the best technology for producing very low NOx emissions plus excellent fuel economy.”

SCR, an aftertreatment technology, injects a water-based solution containing urea into an engine’s hot exhaust stream to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) by breaking it into harmless nitrogen and water vapor.

Volvo has 11 trucks with SCR scheduled to enter field-test service this year. They have built more than 100,000 trucks in Europe with the SCR technology to date.
