Navistar displays ProStar, LoneStar with SCR

Oct. 8, 2012

Las Vegas.  A 2013 Navistar ProStar heavy-duty tractor with a Cummins ISX 15-liter engine and selective catalytic system (SCR) aftertreatment is on public display for the first time at the 2012 American Trucking Assns. (ATA) convention.

Referring to Navistar’s recently announced abandonment of its emissions strategy in favor of SCR, Steve Gilligan, vice president of product marketing said, “This long-awaited combination is a demonstration of what you’ll see in the next couple of months.”

Navistar plans to build “a handful” of the ISX powered tractors in November, another 250 in December and then begin full production in January 2013.  In addition to the 450 hp. 15L engine, the new ProStar carries a Cummins Emissions Solutions diesel particulate filter and SCR after treatment package, a 23-gal. diesel emissions fluid (DEF) tank and modified side fairings to accommodate those additions.

The new Cummins-powered ProStar will be approximately $3,900 more than current MaxxForce 13 versions, according to Gilligan.

Sitting next to the ProStar on the ATA show floor was a LoneStar truck powered by a Navistar MaxxForce 13L engine with Cummins SCR aftertreatment. As announced earlier this year, Navistar expects to begin selling its proprietary 13L with SCR next April, Gilligan said.

WorkStar models with the SCR MaxxForce are also expected in the same timeframe, he said.
