Lightweight trailer designed for superload hauls

Dec. 27, 2012

Talbert Manufacturing has released a new lightweight trailer that, when coupled with a typical tractor, can haul equipment up to 80,000 lbs. capacity while the entire vehicle remains under the 120,000-lb. superload limit of most states.

The 40-ton lightweight trailer weighs just over 18,000 lbs. and is designed to haul everything from excavators to small and mid-sized dozers and other construction equipment.

The customizable trailer is equipped with a 22-in. deck height and a deck boom well. According to Talbert, this 6-ft.-long recessed portion in the rear of the trailer is roughly 6 in. deep and plated for the bucket of an excavator. This lowers the overall height of the boom to ensure the load is a legal height.

The three-axle, 26-ft. trailer features a four-beam deck design and auxiliary crossmembers for extra floor support. Talbert manufactures the trailers using 16-in. beams, consisting of T-1 flanges and 80K webs to reduce empty weight and achieve the target trailer weight and deck height.

The trailer can also be built with Walther EMC Dura-Light Hubs as a lightweight hub solution and CentriFuse brake drums, which are the lightest drums on the market, the company said.

It also has aluminum wheels and features a ratchet neck design. This design eliminates the need for changing adjustment blocks and enables the operator to adjust the ride height of a trailer from one side of the trailer.

According to Talbert, most states require loads with over 120,000 lbs. gross vehicle weight ratings to apply for special permits and face additional restrictions. This trailer is aimed to keep fleets legal without the need for special route surveys and engineering reviews.
