New Optronics lamp incorporates stop, tail, turn and backup functions

March 5, 2014

INDIANAPOLIS. Optronics International has unveiled a new 9-in. oval combination LED stop, tail, turn and backup lamp this week at the NTEA Work Truck Show. The STL68 combo lamp mounts to the surface of a vehicle and at only half an inch thick has the low profile of a through-hole-mounted lamp.

According to the company, vehicles have traditionally been fitted with separate six-inch stop, tail, turn lamps and six-inch backup lamps. Every individual lamp required a mounting hole which provided a path for the intrusion of moisture and other contaminants.

Optronics’ STL68 nine-inch oval combo lamp is designed to give users the benefit of getting the functionality of two lamps for the price of just one. Additionally, because the lamps are all LED, they are far more dependable and thus safer than incandescent lamps.

“Our new combo lamps are a good example of our innovative spirit, industrial design and manufacturing capabilities,” Brett Johnson, president and CEO of Optronics International, said. “We’ve re-imagined vehicular rear lighting and, in the process, have synthesized a lower-cost, highly reliable product that is far more practical than previous solutions.”

Mounting the new lamp requires only a small half-inch egress hole for wiring and four small mounting holes for rivet or screw fasteners. The low-profile lamp fits snugly to the surface of the vehicle for a clean, finished look. It meets all FMVSS 108 photometric requirements for visibility and safety.

Lenses and housings are made of tough polycarbonate material that is sonically welded. The lamps employ a solid-state, surface-mount device (SMD) design that protects their electronics against moisture, shock and vibration, and each comes with one-diode lifetime warranty protection that will replace the lamp if even one diode fails.

The new STL68 combo lamp is expected to begin shipping in the second.
