Allison retarder option for Freightliner NG refuse trucks

ATLANTA.  Freightliner M2 112 refuse chassis powered by their natural gas engine option and speced with an Allison 3000 or 4000 series automatic transmission are now also available with an optional Allison Transmission retarder. Announced at Waste Expo 2014, the retarder provides secondary braking to reduce brake-pad wear and improve the life of the service brakes, according to the company.

The M2 output retarder option is installed in the transmission unit, which itself is integrated with the Cummins ISL G natural gas engine.  An on-dash switch allows the driver to control the retarder’s braking power.

“Stop-and-go applications such as refuse can be tough on trucks, and brakes in particular can experience a lot of wear-and-tear, resulting in downtime,” said Mary Aufdemberg, director of product marketing for Freightliner Trucks. “Options such as the Allison output retarder can help keep trucks out of the shop and on the road, at work.”
