Ford recalling F-250/350 steering gears

Feb. 25, 2015

Ford Motor Co. is recalling some 538 service replacement steering gears that may have been installed on 2008 through 2010 model F-250 and F-350 Super Duty trucks equipped with 6.4-liter diesel engines.

The OEM said the problem is that the replacement steering gear mounting flange does not rest flush against the vehicle frame, which may result in steering gear bolt fatigue.

Over time and with high mileage, the replacement steering gear bolts may break, increasing the risk of a crash, the automaker noted.

Ford stressed that it’s not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this issue. It also believes 375 of the faulty steering gears may have been installed on vehicles in the U.S. and federalized territories, with 156 installed Canada and seven in Mexico.

The OEM added that Ford dealers will replace the bolts and install spacers between the steering gear and the vehicle frame at no cost to customers.
