Snap-on has released a new multi-meter and insulation tester (EEDM650C) for use on hybrid vehicles. The tool allows users to perform more tests faster and more efficiently, Snap-on said.

“With the new Snap-on multi-meter and insulation tester, service technicians will have complete meter functions, insulation testing and 0.25 peak capture all in one tool,” said David Brekke, product manager for Snap-on. “This tool is a game changer when it comes to servicing hybrids because techs can perform insulation testing of the electric motor coil winding. This test is necessary to diagnose premature failure due to the elements that the motor is exposed to over time such as dirt, grease, temperature and stress.”

Features of the tool include:

  • Insulation testing of electric motor coil winding checks the coating on the wires to detect leakage current that can result in poor performance or failure
  • CAT III 1000V, CAT IV 600V safety rating
  • 0.25 peak capture catches faster signals that other meters may miss regarding intermittent issues for improved diagnostics
  • 4000 count color graphic display is the world’s first digital, multi-meter color display, making it easy on the eyes and visible in sunlight
  • Five voltage test ranges (50, 100, 250, 500, 1000 VDC)
  • Special CAT III 1,000V / CAT IV 600V safety standard--special circuit board spacing increases safety and can also be used in power plants and on wind turbines
  • Separate fuse compartment makes it easy to replace fuse via one removal screw
