Key takeaways

  • Multiple commercial truck and trailer models face recalls for brakes, airbags, reflectors, and rear impact protection.
  • Fleet operators should track affected vehicles and apply remedies to ensure safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Early attention to recalls can prevent accidents, reduce liability, and maintain fleet operational readiness.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently issued recall notices for commercial vehicles, including brands from Chevrolet, International, Wabash, and more.

Owners of the affected vehicles should be contacted via U.S. mail over the next two months, but fleet and independent owners of these vehicles can contact the NHTSA Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit nhtsa.gov for more details. More information on each recall can be found below.

Chevrolet Silverado models’ damaged wiring harness may cause power brake assist failure

General Motors is recalling certain 2019-2020 Chevrolet Silverado Medium Duty 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD vehicles. These vehicles were remedied under NHTSA Recall 25V390 with a brake jumper wire harness that was assembled without protective tape. A wiring harness that is missing protective tape can allow the wires to become damaged. Damaged brake jumper wires can result in power brake assist failure, increasing the risk of a crash.

This recall potentially affects 891 vehicles. Dealers will remove the installed wire harness, apply protective tape, and reinstall the wire harness. Owner notification letters are planned to be mailed December 22. Owners may contact GM customer assistance at 866-467-9700. GM's number for this recall is N252531990. Vehicles in this recall were previously repaired under 25V390 and will need to have the new remedy completed.

Freightliner, Western Star models’ loss of vehicle control from loose axle clamp fasteners

Daimler Truck North America is recalling certain 2020-2026 Western Star 49X, Freightliner Business Class M2, Freightliner 114SD, Freightliner 108SD; 2021-2026 Western Star 47X; 2021-2023 Freightliner 122SD; 2022 Western Star 48X; and 2023 Western Star 4700 vehicles. The axle clamp fasteners may be loose, which can result in a loss of vehicle control. A loss of vehicle control increases the risk of a crash.

This recall potentially affects 18,783 vehicles. The remedy is currently under development. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed January 3. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 800-547-0712. DTNA's number for this recall is F1027.

International CV models’ brake pressure switch harness may short and reduce brake performance

International Motors is recalling certain 2019-2020 CV vehicles. The brake pressure switch harness may not have protective material on the wires, causing a short circuit and reducing brake performance. Reduced brake performance can extend stopping distance and increase the risk of a crash.

This recall potentially affects 159 vehicles. Dealers will remove, add protective material, and reinstall the brake pressure switch harness. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed January 5. Owners may contact International customer service at 800-448-7825. International's number for this recall is 25521. Vehicles in this recall that were previously repaired under 23V282 and 25V414 will need to have the new remedy completed.

McNeilus Metro Pak models’ missing reflex reflectors and rear clearance lights

McNeilus Truck & Manufacturing is recalling certain 2021-2025 Metro Pak vehicles. The side and rear reflex reflectors and rear clearance lights may be missing. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment." Missing reflectors and rear clearance lights can reduce the vehicle's visibility to other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash.

This recall potentially affects 70 vehicles. McNeilus will install the side reflectors and lights. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed December 22. Owners may contact McNeilus customer service at 888-686-7278.

As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment." Missing reflectors can reduce the vehicle's visibility to other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash.

This recall potentially affects 115 vehicles. McNeilus will install the side reflectors. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed December 22. Owners may contact McNeilus customer service at 888-686-7278.

Ram models’ driver’s airbag may not deploy

Chrysler is recalling certain 2021-2022 Ram 1500, Ram 2500, Ram 3500, Ram 4500, and Ram 5500 vehicles. The steering column control module may cause the driver's side airbag to not deploy as intended. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection." A driver's side airbag that does not deploy as intended increases the risk of injury in a crash.

This recall potentially affects 532 vehicles. Dealers will replace the steering column control module. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed December 11. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is 14C.

As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 223, "Rear Impact Guards" and 224, "Rear Impact Protection." The incorrect guard may not sufficiently protect a following vehicle during a rear-end crash, increasing the risk of injury.

This recall potentially affects 295 vehicles. Wabash will replace the rear impact guards. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed December 4. Owners may contact Wabash customer service at 765-771-5404.
