Recall Roundup: NHTSA issues recalls for Altec, GM, and emergency vehicles over safety defects

Safety defects across Altec cranes, GM vans, and Farber emergency units raise crash and equipment failure risks for fleets.

Key takeaways

  • NHTSA recalls affect Altec, GM, and Farber vehicles, with risks tied to steering, lift, and electronic failures.
  • GM Express and Savana vans may lose steering control due to a loose steering gear assembly nut.
  • Altec cranes and Farber emergency units exhibit structural and system defects that require inspection and repair.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently issued recall notices for commercial vehicles, including brands from Altec, General Motors, and more.

Owners of the affected vehicles should be contacted via U.S. mail over the next two months, but fleet and independent owners of these vehicles can contact the NHTSA Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit nhtsa.gov for more details. More information on each recall can be found below.

Altec AC models’ missing welds on personnel jib platform

Altec Industries is recalling certain 2024-2026 AC Series Crane vehicles. The inside joints between the side plates and the base plates of the 26-ft. insulating personnel jib (IJ26) may be missing welds. Missing welds can lead to platform joint failure due to fatigue or overload, causing the platform to fall from the boom tip and increasing the risk of injury.

This recall potentially affects 14 vehicles. Altec will advise owners to inspect the IJ26 jib for missing welds. If the welds are missing, the jib should be taken out of service. Altec will add the missing welds or provide a repair procedure and kit. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 7. Owners may contact Altec customer service at 877-462-5832. Altec's number for this recall is MAB-3330.

Farber Specialty models’ touchscreen display may fail

Farber Specialty Vehicles is recalling certain 2025 45 MCXCR and 2025-2026 HX620 SBA 6X4 emergency vehicles. The touchscreen display may stop responding to touch commands or fail to power on, preventing the activation of exterior emergency lights and firefighting and other emergency equipment. A loss of exterior lights can reduce the vehicle's visibility to other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash. Inoperative equipment can delay emergency response, increasing the risk of injury.

This recall potentially affects three vehicles. Farber Specialty will work with Akron Brass to update the firmware and repair the power line. Owner notification letters were expected to be mailed June 25. Owners may contact Farber customer service at 800-331-3188.

General Motors models’ improperly tightened steering gear assembly nut

General Motors (GM) is recalling certain 2025-2026 Express and 2025-2026 Savana vehicles. The steering gear assembly may have a nut that was not properly tightened. A loose nut that separates from the steering gear assembly while driving can cause a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.

This recall potentially affects 26,541 vehicles. Dealers will inspect and replace the steering gear assembly, if necessary. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 10. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 888-988-7267 or Chevrolet customer service at 800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is N262563570.
