Rolled out at the top of the year, ConocoPhillips’ reformulated premium synthetic blend API CJ-4 heavy-duty motor oil, which is marketed under both Guardol and Kendall band names, has been proving the value of its proprietary Liquid Titanium additive in fleet service, according to the oil supplier.
According to ConocoPhillips, Guardol ECT and Kendall Super-D XA reformulated with the new additive improves engine-wear and bearing-corrosion protection and increases oxidation stability, with no tradeoffs in other performance advantages.
The company explained that the liquid titanium additive chemically binds with engine parts to reduce wear and extend engine life. Not available as an aftermarket additive, the liquid titanium is completely soluble in the lubricant and contains no solids or material in suspension.
ConocoPhillips has put the oil through extensive field trials with several fleets to gain “proof of performance,” Reggie Dias, director of commercial product, told FleetOwner. “We wanted to corroborate the enhanced wear protection and extended drain capabilities [of the oil in fleet service.”
According to Dias, the field testing was conducted in several independently operated truck and bus fleets and was done over several different engine platforms and vehicle types. In addition, the testing was done with vehicles operating under different conditions or service types and the trials were monitored y used oil analysis. All told, the trials accumulated over 4 million miles of oil miles as of the end of the second quarter of 2009.
Dias related that improved wear protection was seen by the fleet vehicles in all engine platforms test. “The wear rate (PPM wear for iron per 1,000 oil miles or 100 oil hours) was lower for oil with Liquid Titanium relative to oil without,” said Dias. In addition, he state d that oil viscosity, TBN depletion and copper/lead corrosion were all “well in control and unaffected by Liquid Titanium.”

Guardol ECT with Liquid Titanium, which is sold under the Conoco, Phillips 66 and 76 Lubricants brand names, and Kendall Super-D XA with Liquid Titanium are available in quart and 1-gal. jugs, as well as in drums and in bulk.
