PennDOT sets truck weight limits on bridges

Aug. 21, 2013

The Pennsylvania Dept. of Transportation plans to add new weight restrictions to 1,100 bridges throughout the state. The move would bar heavy trucks from critical travel routes.

The move could disrupt trucking routes and force big rigs onto back roads that aren’t designed to handle them, according to a Reading Eagle report.

PennDOT recently posted the list of bridges affected on its website at http://www.dot.state.pa.us/.

The agency has been threatening to impose the restrictions for nearly a year but had held off in case state legislators decided to approve a statewide increase in funds to fix the bridges, the news report says.

When legislators recessed without resolving the issue, PennDOT said it would move forward with the restrictions. Some bridges already have restrictions, which would be lowered, while others would be restricted for the first time.
