Ford's Ranger is most fuel-efficient gas-powered midsize pickup

The new 2019 Ford Ranger has claimed the highest fuel efficiency ratings of gasoline-powered midsize pickups sold in the U.S.

The new 2019 Ford Ranger has claimed the highest fuel efficiency ratings of gasoline-powered midsize pickups sold in the U.S. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates the truck's fuel economy at 21 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined in 4x2 configuration.

As a 4x4, the Ranger is just a click or two down with EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 20 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined. Those are also the highest fuel economy ratings for a gasoline-powered 4x4 midsize pickup.

The Ranger delivers that fuel efficiency along with durability and capability, noted Todd Eckert, Ford truck group marketing manager, "while also providing in-city maneuverability and the freedom desired by many midsize pickup truck buyers to go off the grid."

The pickup's standard 2.3L EcoBoost 4-cyl. is good for 270 hp. and 310 lbs-ft. of torque—the highest torque among current gasoline-powered midsize pickups—and is paired with a versatile 10-speed automatic transmission. The truck also boasts 7,500 lbs. towing capacity with its available tow package and 1,860 lbs. max payload.

The Ranger gets advanced safety and technology features as well, including a blind spot camera assist system with trailer coverage, a terrain management system, and a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot that supports up to 10 devices.

Ranger production is underway at Ford's Michigan Assembly Plant and is slated to arrive at dealerships starting in January.
