Integrating the latest innovations in vehicle sensors, braking, and steering systems, ZF Friedrichshafen AG and WABCO Holdings Inc. on June 29 demonstrated the prototype of an “industry first” collision avoidance technology for commercial vehicles, the Evasive Maneuver Assist (EMA).

As Dr. Gerhard Gumpoltsberger, Head of Innovation Management in ZF’s Advanced Engineering unit explains in the video clip, the system allows the components—including the driver—to precisely control  an emergency maneuver, delivering the correct amount of braking and steering, and preventing crashes and rollovers.

While long-time drivers may be reluctant to embrace technology that they perceive as taking away control, the next generation of drivers has grown up with video games and simulators, and will adapt readily, Gumpoltsberger told Fleet Owner, speaking at the test track of RWTH Aachen University in Aldenhoven, Germany.
