Blue Bird is stepping further into the commercial step van market with two new alternative fuel chassis, powered by either propane or battery-electric technology.

These chassis are built for Class 5-6 vehicles and are particularly suited for last-mile delivery. The frameworks have a 55-degree wheel cut for steering in tight spaces and support a GVWR of up to 23,000 lb.

The propane chassis uses a Ford 7.3L V8 engine and a Ford 6R140 six-speed transmission. It has a single tank for storing up to 45 gallons of HD-5 propane. The battery-electric chassis features a 140kWh lithium-ion battery pack, capable of DC Level 3 charging and offering a range of up to 130 miles.

In the video above, see Blue Bird’s propane chassis display at the Advanced Clean Transportation Expo, where Andy Moore, director of commercial chassis for Blue Bird, shares details on these step van frameworks with FleetOwner.
