Wabco begins work on next-gen TPMS system

Wabco has partnered with Huf Electronics Bretten to develop its next-generation tire pressure monitoring system for trucks, buses and trailers.

Huf Electronics Bretten is a provider of tire pressure monitoring equipment to the automotive industry. Wabco’s new system will be available to original equipment manufacturers and in the aftermarket in the second half of 2014, the company said.

Building on the IVTM system, Wabco said it expects to offer its customers a choice of internally or externally mounted tire sensors or a mix of both types of sensors on new commercial vehicles. In the new system, Wabco will leverage the additional tire temperature monitoring capability of the innovative internal sensor technology from Huf Electronics Bretten.

“Wabco is committed to continue to pioneer the industry’s breakthrough technologies for tire pressure monitoring in commercial vehicles, and we will further show our technology leadership by offering a unique choice of internal and external tire sensors,” said Bodo Klein, vice president, Vehicle Dynamics and Control Systems. “Wabco strives to deliver a world of difference through innovations that enable vehicle makers and aftermarket customers to benefit from Wabco’s newest advancements in vehicle safety and efficiency.”

Tire pressure monitoring detects tire leakages at an early stage, allowing drivers to park safely and take appropriate action to minimize vehicle downtime. Proper inflation extends tire life by as much as 20%, Wabco said, and reduces fuel consumption by up to 2%.
