Diesel drops another nickel, running at 6-year low

For the 11th week in a row, diesel prices across the U.S have slipped—holding at levels last seen six years ago, according to data tracked by the Energy Information Administration (EIA).

For the 11th week in a row, diesel prices across the U.S have slipped—holding at levels last seen six years ago, according to data tracked by the Energy Information Administration (EIA).

The average U.S. retail pump price for diesel was down 5.1 cents in the Aug. 10 report, to $2.617 per gallon. That’s about $1.23 per gallon cheaper than this time last year, and the lowest price since October 2009.

Diesel prices were down a nickel or so in all regions, dropping 6.4 cents in California to below $3, although $2.96 price is still the highest price for diesel in the contiguous 48 states. The West Coast, less California, saw a decline 5.5 cents to $2.706.

Diesel dipped 4.9 cents on Gulf Coast in to $2.487, the lowest in the country and slightly cheaper that the cost in the Midwest region, which saw a 4.6 cent decline to $2.515.

The East Coast registered a drop of 5.6 cents to $2.713, while the price was down 4.5 cents in the Rocky Mountain region, to $2.64.
