Wabash National Corporation expanded its trailer aerodynamic solutions product line with its fifth device designed to improve trailer aerodynamics and fuel economy — the AeroFin XL Tail Device.

According to the company, the AeroFin XL is a lightweight and durable aerodynamic tail device that directs airflow across the rear of the trailer to reduce aerodynamic drag. The device deploys and retracts automatically with swing door operation, requiring no additional interaction from the driver and does not interfere with trailer loading and unloading.

“When used in conjunction with Wabash National’s Ventix DRS (drag reduction system), the AeroFin XL provides over 10% improvement in fuel economy (certified by an independent third party in accordance with SAE J1252 Wind Tunnel Test),” the company said. “Together, the devices are verified as an EPA SmartWay Elite aerodynamic device combination, a new category for the SmartWay Technology program that recognizes devices providing the highest levels of fuel savings. “

When used as a stand-alone device, the AeroFin XL provides over 4% improvement in fuel economy, Wabash added.

The AeroFin XL is the fourth aerodynamic solution for trailers that Wabash National has introduced this year. Building on the fleet-proven success of its DuraPlate AeroSkirt, introduced in 2009, Wabash National’s Composites business introduced the AeroFin Tail Device, Ventix DRS, and AeroSkirt CX at ATA’s Technology and Maintenance Council Exhibition (TMC) in February. All products are commercially available.

“We realize there is no single solution that is ideal for every trailer application and customer,” Bauman added. “It’s important that carriers understand aerodynamic testing methods and the questions that need to be asked when specifying aerodynamic devices. Our sales team at Wabash National is available to help fleet managers and owner-operators investigate the fuel saving options suitable for their operations.”
