Double Coin Holdings, Ltd. has announced it has become the first tire manufacturer headquartered in China to have a commercial truck tire placed on Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) SmartWay list of verified fuel-saving technologies. The tire maker said this means its Double Coin brand is “now recognized with other SmartWay verified technologies from the likes of Bridgestone, Goodyear, Michelin and others.”

SmartWay Transport is collaborative effort between EPA and the freight sector that aims to improve energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gases and air pollutant emissions, and improve energy security. Double Coin tires are supplied here by Monrovia, CA-basedChina Manufacturers Alliance, LLC, (CMA), a subsidiary of China’s Double Coin Holdings, Ltd.

Aaron Murphy, vp of CMA, said Double Coin and CMA are committed to leading the competition when it comes to research and developmenton products from China “Our customers have reiterated that the Double Coin brands are extremely important to the profitability of their business and now this verified technology allows more end users to benefit from the value provided by Double Coin,” he stated.

Murphy pointed out that based on data provided by tire manufacturers and EPA testing and research, EPA has determined that using low-rolling resistance tires on the steer, drive and trailer axle positions can provide a reduction in NOx emissions and an estimated fuel savings of 3% or greater relative to the "best selling" new tires.

The FT105 trailer tire from Double Coin has been verified as a low rolling resistance trailer tire. In essence, according to Murphy, the FT105 “runs cooler and helps reduce fuel consumption, which can lead to less cost for a fleet while also benefiting the environment.”

Development of the FT105 resulted from collaboration between CMA staff in China and in North America. “The FT105 was designed from scratch to meet requirements of the several markets,” said Murphy. “In both the replacement and OEM channels, this type of product from Double Coin was required by the most progressive organizations as a means to bring additional value to their customers.”

He noted the FT105 is part of Double Coin’s fuel-efficient tire lineup, which consists of a series of tires including the FR605 and the FD405, all made of advanced tread compounds and internal construction to provide lower rolling resistance and longer mileage. In addition, the FR605 steer position tire features a five-rib tread to enhance even wear and traction in long-haul steer axle positions. The FD405 drive position tire has a deep 26/32-in tread with stone drilling protectors to promote long original mileage.
