ATA research arm outlines strategic goals

The newly-created research arm of lobbying group American Trucking Assns. (ATA), the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI), said studying the effects of driver fatigue will be its top project.

"There is agreement within the trucking industry that our highest priority research projects should be those dealing with and understanding the relationship between fatigue and impairment in transportation operations," said William Canary, ATA’s president and ATRI’s vice chairman. "We need to focus our resources and efforts on conducting and promoting credible research aimed at reducing fatigue and optimizing alertness in over-the-road operations."

ATRI said it will also study the following: understanding how truck configurations may cause crashes; safety technology and return on investment; privacy standards for incident and event data recorders; practical strategies for managing operator fatigue; cost models for EPA Regulations; environmental and fuel-saving benefits from higher productivity vehicle configurations; and how to improve safety in highway work zones.
