Wireless LAN for reefers

The R:Com System provides a wireless connection between office PCs and Thermo King Smart Reefers or reefer data loggers. Using spread spectrum communications with a 200-yd. range, the wireless local area network (LAN) system can be used by distribution fleets to track vehicle arrivals and departures, download refrigeration-unit operating information, monitor alarms and collect other reefer information.

System hardware consists of a base station receiver connected to a PC running R:Com software, a vehicle-mounted communications unit, and R:Com relays, or repeaters, for extending system coverage in large terminals. The Windows NT/2000-based software periodically queries all units within its range, logging in newly arrived vehicles and downloading stored reefer data. The system can also relay any alarms to a pager, mobile phone or email account.

Later this year, Thermo King says it will upgrade R:Com to add wireless reefer control, allowing fleets to remotely change clocks or set points, program units and turn them on or off.

The new system works with Thermo King Smart Reefers equipped with MP-IV, MP-V, MP-VI and TG-VI controllers, as well as the company's DMS-III, DRS, DAS and Accutrac dataloggers.
