Wireless internet provider @Road has joined the Freight Transportation Security Consortium (FTSC), which is working to establish industry standards for security-related messaging and wireless data encryption for hazmat and high-risk material carriers.

Since September, @Road has been working with industry associations, congressional leaders, law enforcement and customers to educate the public and private sectors on the terrorist risks associated with the transportation of hazardous and other valuable materials. @Road formalized its efforts in a Homeland Security Initiative announced in December.

FTSC executive director Drew Robertson said the companies in FTSC believe monitoring the movement of chemicals and fuels with leading-edge wireless monitoring services is one of the most effective ways to markedly reduce the risk of hijacking and tampering by terrorists.
