SCS Transportation Inc. today reported revenue of $201.2 million for the third quarter, up 1.5% on a per-day basis from $195.2 million in the third quarter of 2001.

Third-quarter operating income rose 46% to $8.1 million, from $5.6 million a year earlier, primarily due to a combination of cost-management efforts and a modest increase in shipping volumes.

"We are achieving meaningful profit improvement for SCS Transportation, even as the economy continues to move sideways," said president & CEO Bert Trucksess. "As we move forward, we envision additional improvement based on new and existing initiatives, plus potential upside when an economic recovery takes hold."
