The Ambassador Niagara Signature Bridge Group, which hopes to build a private, truck-only bridge connecting the U.S. and Canada, has acquired a seven-acre parcel of land on the U.S. side of the Niagara River.

The bridge would link Buffalo to Fort Erie along a corridor that follows the path of the International Railroad Bridge.

Speculation has risen that the group intends to buy a 50-acre site on the U.S. side of the border to create a truck inspection and processing area. The group promises to make public details of the plan by year’s end.

In recent meetings with public officials the group has advocated a two-bridge system in which trucks would travel on the new truck-only bridge and the Peace Bridge would handle passenger car traffic.
On Friday, negotiators reached a deal giving the Peace Bridge Authority the right of eminent domain, allowing it to take property for a future bridge replacement project.
