After 3.5 million miles of tests, truckload carrier Cargo Transporters is spec'ing a lane guidance system developed by Anaheim, CA-based Iteris for all of its new vehicles.
The system, called AutoVue, detects the position of the lane markings relative to the vehicle through machine vision. Based on the geometry of the vehicle and the roadway, advanced algorithms determine if and when the driver starts making an unintended lane departure and issues a warning. The warning may be audible, through the vehicle's speaker system, or haptic, vibrations through either the seat or the steering wheel, or both, said Iteris.
According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), the single largest cause of driver-related fatalities is lane departure. More than 40% of all vehicular fatalities include a lane or road departure as a contributing factor on the accident report, NHTSA said.
