The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is proposing to reverse regulations that prohibit commercial drivers who use insulin to control diabetes from operating in interstate commerce. Some states currently permit insulin-dependent drivers, but only in intrastate operation.
Insulin-using drivers, including those licensed by states, would be allowed to drive interstate under the following conditions:

Applicants must already have a CDL or noncommercial license.

They must have operated a commercial vehicle for at least three years.

Driving records must not contain any suspensions or revocations.

Drivers must provide complete medical histories and be examined by an endocrinologist and an ophthalmologist annually.

Drivers will be required to carry a glucose monitor and must use it before and during their driving shifts. They must stop driving if their glucose levels become too high or too low.
