Troubled transportation provider Trailer Bridge narrowed its losses last year despite the effects of a sluggish U.S. economy.

Trailer Bridge, which provides integrated trucking and marine freight service to and from all points in the lower 48 states and Puerto Rico, lost $7.2 million last year on revenue of $73.8 million.

However, it is an improvement from the $29.4 million it lost on revenue of $81.5 million in 2001.

Jacksonville, FL-based Trailer Bridge noted that demand for its services has risen in the first quarter this year, meaning that fourth quarter 2002 volume and revenue levels don't reflect its present business levels.

In January and February, the company said overall capacity-use levels of 87.8% and 20.1% southbound and northbound, respectively, were similar to the fourth quarter of 2002.
