The promise of low-cost wireless communications has captivated the transportation industry, according to Amherst, NH-basedVertical Wireless Associates.

While the automotive sector is the current battleground for telematics applications and technologies, Vertical Wireless says the commercial transportation sector will ultimately gain the most from the widespread deployment of integrated high-end wireless information services. As hardware costs come down, the business case for integrated onboard electronics on commercial vehicles is becoming more compelling.

Telematics in the trucking industry represents the convergence of the numerous first- and second-generation technologies and products currently in use, products ranging from automated fuel tax software and dash-mounted data capturing devices to integrated client-server dispatch systems and remote diagnostics applications.

Market participants that can offer fleet owners a comprehensive migration path, which allows fleets to incorporate new capabilities over time while protecting their existing investments, will dominate, Vertical Wireless says in its report titled Commercial Markets for Vehicle Telematics: Strategies for Growth.

Vertical Wireless is a marketing and technology strategy company that specializes in markets and applications for wireless data communications.
