The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened its 10th crash injury research and engineering network (CIREN) center at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin center will study the effects of vehicle crashes, how to prevent them, and how to improve the prognosis and treatment of crash trauma patients.

"Research into the injuries suffered by people in real world crashes is a vital component of our program to make vehicles safer," said Dr. Jeffrey Runge, NHTSA’s administrator. "The CIREN trauma centers are in a unique position to carry out that detailed research. This new CIREN center will continue efforts to prevent injuries on America’s highways."

The center, self-funded by the Medical College and its partner, Froedtert Hospital, will conduct basic and clinical research and use the new findings to develop strategies to reduce fatalities and injuries in vehicle crashes. It will be the first self-funded center in the CIREN network, said NHTSA.
