The U.S. division of fuel producer and distributor British Petroleum (BP) is gearing up to test low-sulfur diesel in partnership with the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority.

In a pilot project using low-sulfur diesel in 10 city buses, BP hopes to find out how its grade of low-sulfur diesel, marketed under the brand name Environmentally Clean Diesel (ECD), handles real-world conditions. Using low-sulfur diesel in the 10 buses should result in an immediate 10% reduction in their exhaust emissions, said BP.

BP added that it plans to fuel more than 200 new buses with low-sulfur diesel over the next two years. These buses will be equipped with the latest engine management and diesel exhaust technology. BP added that its ECD low sulfur diesel formula meets federal standards for diesel fuels set to take effect in 2006.
