Honda Manufacturing of Alabama LLC has chosen third-party logistics provider Ryder System to develop a just-in-time (JIT) system for its Lincoln, AL, factory.

The inbound logistics project began in late October 2001 and should be completely up and running by the middle of this year, Miami-based Ryder said. The project focuses of three areas – maximizing use of trailer load space, designing routes to minimize non-productive miles, and maximizing the use of trucks, trailers and other transportation equipment.

Ryder has done work previously for Honda, working with Honda of Canada's factory in Alliston, Ontario, in 1999 to provide JIT inbound materials flow, trial parts management, materials scheduling and supplier coordination.
