Automated asset tracking for cargo containers is one of the new remote tracking and monitoring services made possible by development of low-cost data communications over the Globalstar satellite phone network. The service is currently available across eastern portions of the U.S. and Canada, and is expected to cover both countries entirely this Spring.

The container tracking service uses a small simplex modem developed by AeroAstro, which allows one-way transmission of GPS location data at scheduled intervals or when triggered by sensors monitoring door openings, temperatures and other variables. Data sent over the Globalstar network is then accessed by fleets and other users via secure Internet connections.

The new modem is also being used for cost-effective remote monitoring of fuel meters and security monitoring for mobile assets of all types.
