The Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority plans to install a $10.7-million traffic management and security system for the seven bridges and two tunnels it manages for New York City. The system will incorporate new high-resolution video technology to provide surveillance capabilities over a high-speed fiber optic network.

Transdyn Controls, a subsidiary of Houston-based Powell Industries, will install the system over the next four years. Called Advanced Traffic Management Incident Detect/Evaluate/Act System (ATM IDEAS), the project incorporates new computer, communication, and software systems at each bridge and tunnel control center and the development of a new central Operations Control and Communication Center (OCCC).

The system is designed to allow the Tunnel Authority to monitor traffic, weather and roadway conditions, detect and respond rapidly to incidents and events and provide real-time motorist advisories through electronic message signs and radio. It also provides the Authority with beefed up security measures via better video surveillance capabilities at the Henry Hudson, Triborough, Bronx-Whitestone, Throgs Neck, Verrazano-Narrows, Gil Hodges-Marine Parkway, and Cross Bay bridges and the Queens-Midtown and Brooklyn-Battery tunnels.
