Freightliner LLC subsidiaries Sterling Truck and Western Star unveiled updates to their construction-segment trucks at the recent ConExpo-Con/Agg show.

For its A-Line, L-Line and Acterra models, Sterling is adding a full line of proprietary axles, a rear engine PTO option for the MBE 4000 engine, and an enhanced taper leaf front suspension.

The front axle package, built by the Axle Alliance Group (AAG) partnership formed by parent company DaimlerChrysler, offers up to a 28-lb. weight savings over similarly spec'd axles. Rear axle offerings include single and tandem models offering weight savings of up to 128 lb.

Benefits of the rear-engine PTO option, available later this year, include a payload advantage and improved weight distribution.

Outside of proprietary systems, Sterling is adding the Cummins ISC engine as an option to its L-Line trucks. Hendrickson's Composilite ST 13,500-lb. steerable pusher axle will be available on the L-Line and Acterra.

Western Star announced a proprietary extreme-duty six-rod suspension for its Star 6900 XD with weight ratings from 85,000 to 110,000 lb., AxleTech International SPRC 1927 tandem axles and 68-in. axle spacing.
