The engine is developed from the 460-bhp D12 engine. The Volvo FH12 engine range now spans from 380-bhp to 500-bhp, and complies with the Euro 3 emission standard.

Volvo I-Shift, the new gear changing system, offers improved comfort and safety levels besides reduced fuel consumption and lower weight. Volvo I-Shift changes gears swiftly and smoothly in response to actual conditions encountered on the road.

The latest FH12 truck incorporates a series of new and improved safety features. Volvo's Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP) is the first of its kind to go into production in the truck industry. This system helps the driver to retain full control of the vehicle in conditions such as unfavorable road surfaces, any tendency towards excessive roll, or after sharp braking.

Another important safety innovation is the front underrun protection system (FUPS), which is now standard and fully integrated in the cab design. In the event of a frontal collision with an automobile, FUPS is designed to prevent the car from going underneath the front of the truck.
