Fleets using Nextel's iDEN network for wireless data communications can now extend secure corporate VPNs (virtual private networks) to drivers and other mobile workers. The company has signed a joint marketing agreement with Padcom Inc. to offer customers TotalRoam, a software package that provides seamless mobility between a variety of wireless networks, including WiFi and private RF.

The software's VPN ability gives mobile workers continuous remote connectivity to company networks while meeting Federal encryption standards, according to Padcom. It can also be used to maintain connectivity between Nextel's iDEN network and other wireless LAN and wide-area networks.
