FedEx Ground today opened fully automated terminal in Wheeling, IL, to serve the Chicagoland area.

The company said the distribution facility is the second automated terminal to open as part of FedEx Ground's $1.8 billion network expansion plan, which calls for the addition of 10 new hubs and the expansion of 23 existing hubs, as well as the relocation or expansion of more than 300 pickup and delivery terminals.

The 107,000 sq.-ft. terminal is triple the size of the center in Northbrook that it is replacing. In addition, the facility is equipped with state-of-the-art package processing equipment, including high-speed, camera-based scanners that read all sides of a package to capture digital images of each bar code.
