Oshkosh Truck Corp. has unveiled a hybrid truck designed for the U.S. military, with the hybrid technology "hardened" to withstand the rigors of off-road use.

Oshkosh has equipped its Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT) with its new ProPulse hybrid electric drive system. The Oshkosh, WI-based truckmaker said ProPulse helps improve fuel economy in off-road operation, reduce emissions, improves life cycle costs, and can serve as an on-board AC generator.

Oshkosh did not say if it plans to provide the ProPulse to its commercial line of products, but said the trucking industry as a whole could stand to benefit from viable hybrid systems.
