The Ambassador Bridge, which links Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, has added three commercial traffic inspection lanes for use by the U.S. Customs Service.

Dan Stamper, president of the Bridge's administration, said those lanes have been outfitted with temporary inspection booths and will increase processing capacity by full 50%.

"These new booths . will significantly reduce severe daily backups of commercial vehicles on the streets of Windsor, Ontario, and support Michigan and Ontario's just-in-time [freight] industry," he added.

The Ambassador Bridge is one of the busiest freight gateways linking the U.S. and Canada, with truck traffic increasing 10% annually. Delays have also risen in the wake of tighter security measures put in place after Sept. 11, increasing crossing time by an hour or more in some cases.
