Online haz-mat resource

An Internet-based hazardous-materials support service is now available 24/7 to provide fleets with information on government regulations and incident-reporting procedures.

The Spill Center, an environmental claims management firm, has integrated its online resource, www.spillcenter.com, into its traditional phone center to give clients quick access to services.

Subscribers with password-protected access can report spills 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to a staff of legal, environmental and technical experts. The Center takes care of all required local, state and federal regulatory reporting, which helps customers avoid noncompliance fines.

Clients can get names of cleanup contractors and emergency-response teams from the Spill Center; in the future, direct access to this database will be available online.

Subscribers can submit detailed spill response and reporting instructions online, which will be used by the Spill Center to create customized contingency plans. When a spill is reported, these plans will be activated.

Wireless tire monitors

SmarTire, based in British Columbia, has developed a wireless tire monitoring system that constantly checks tire pressure and temperature while driving. Wheel-mounted sensors measure tire pressure and temperature data every 60 sec., then relay that information via wireless radio technology to an interactive LCD monitor in the truck cab. The system automatically alerts the driver to tire pressure loss via a two-stage visual and audible alarm.

SmarTire says its system is used by 90% of all Indy racecars and is approved for use by Goodyear, Michelin and Bridgestone/Firestone on their tire products. SmarTire's system is currently commercially available in 20 European nations. Originally available just for “run-flat” tire products, SmarTire's system is now available in the U.S.

Capable of monitoring up to 12 ft. behind a vehicle, the Jacobs Electronics Backup Sensor uses microwave technology, which can't be blocked by mud, snow or rain. The warning device uses dash-mounted flashing LED lights and an audible alarm that increase in frequency as a backing vehicle nears an obstacle. Powered by a vehicle's backup light circuit, it can be mounted under a plastic bumper fascia, below a steel bumper, or on the side of a trailer hitch. Installation also requires running a single wire from the sensor into the truck cab and mounting the LED assembly within the driver's line of sight. Visit www.jacobselectronics.com.
