INDIANAPOLIS, IN. General Motors introduced the new Duramax 6600 6.6-liter turbodiesel for 2006 model year Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana full-size vans here yesterday at the National Truck Equipment Assn.’s Work Truck Show.

The V-8 engine delivers 250 hp @3200 rpm and 460 lb.-ft. of torque @1600 rpm. According to GM, the 2006 Duramax has been upgraded “to provide capabilities matched with quietness and smoothness not found in competitors’ diesel-equipped vans.”

GM said upgrades to the engine include:

  • Revised variable-geometry turbocharger that is aerodynamically more efficient for smooth and immediate response and lower emissions
  • Revised piston design to lower compression ratio to 16.8:1 from 17.5:1
  • Cylinder block casting and machining changes for increased reliability and durability
  • Fuel injectors spray directly onto glow plus for faster, better quality starts
  • Improved glow plus heat up faster through an independent controller
  • Air induction system re-tuned for quietness
  • First application of a new 32-bit E35 controller, which adjusts and compensates for the fuel flow to improve efficiency and reduce emissions
  • New air intake heater to reduce smoke and emissions during cold or light-load driving “Diesel power makes the most sense for customers who rely on their vehicle for towing and hauling,” said Jack Blanchard, asst. chief engineer for Duramax engines. “With the Duramax 6600, they get the power they need in a pleasing, quiet and easy-driving package.”

The Duramax 6600 is mated to the GM Hydra-Matic 4L85-E automatic transmission which GM said gives the Express and Savana vans exceptional towing and grade capability.

According to the OEM, preliminary testing shows composite fuel economy of 20.2 MPG, an advantage of more than 2 MPG compared to the primary competitor. The Duramax 6600 is also compatible with B20 biodiesel fuel, GM noted.
