Jacksonville, FL-based truckload carrier Landstar System has formed a new subsidiary, Landstar Global Logistics.

Henry Gerkins, Landstar’s president & CEO, said Landstar Global Logistics is being positioned to become what he calls a “premium global logistics services provider” so it can better serve customer needs on a worldwide basis, not just in the domestic U.S. market.

“Manufacturers and suppliers continue to tighten their supply chains, creating greater international opportunities for capacity providers willing and able to step up to the plate,” he noted. “We will attack the international and warehousing markets using the same model we’ve used to succeed on the domestic front as a non-asset based provider of third-party capacity.”

In terms of logistics, Gerkins said the company’s new subsidiary would offer ocean and air freight forwarding, intermodal, multimodal, and expedited air and ground transportation, as well as warehousing capabilities earmarked for expansion in 2006.
