The American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA) is focusing on safety and security issues during its National Safety Conference this year in Long Beach, CA, Sept. 13-14. Topics include:

Understanding Carrier Profiles. Data acquired and maintained by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) helps determine whether a carrier will be targeted for a safety review. But how accurate is that data? The Department of Transportation Office of Inspector General has criticized SafeStat data as incomplete, untimely and misleading for public use.

The Driver Qualification Process. Before you place a driver behind the wheel of a truck, a variety of regulations must be complied with before that driver is qualified to operate that vehicle. Background investigations, employment histories, and drug and alcohol checks are not all you need to know.

Highway Watch. Highway Watch started in Pennsylvania as a way to encourage truck drivers to report erratic and unsafe driving and road accidents. But since September 11, 2001, the program has developed into -- and received federal funding for – a training effort that teaches truck drivers and other professional highway users how to spot and report unusual or irregular activities that may imperil structures or people.
