Thermo King Corp. has unveiled a line of multi-temperature refrigeration systems for trucks that complements its new Spectrum multi-temp trailer products. Spectrum is the new brand name for all of Thermo King's multi-temperature-capable products.
Laurie Rengel, global product manager for self-powered truck products at Thermo King, told FLEET OWNER that the new truck reefers are geared for the convenience store market so that ice cream, soda, and fresh produce can all be delivered on one vehicle.
“We're taking our TS-500 system and adding our Spectrum evaporator so the unit can handle multiple temperatures,” Rengel said. The new Spectrum truck reefers eventually replace what's currently available.”
“Each truck or trailer Spectrum unit has the ability to maintain a single temperature or multiple temperatures,” said Mark Watson, global product manager for transportation products. “For trucks, however, this will be a more dedicated application, as there is no need for backhauls with the typical city/route delivery patterns we see.”
A new easy-to-use control system is located in the truck's dash; an optional control panel set inside the truck body near the rear door lets drivers program the temperature immediately after loading.
Since user-friendly controls have been a critical concern in this segment, Thermo King modeled them after those used on automatic teller machines. “During the holiday season, many fleets in these route applications hire extra drivers who've never used such equipment. Fleets want something simple and familiar for them to use,” said Watson.
The Spectrum refrigeration systems for trucks and trailers achieve greater capacity and capabilities in conjuntion with Thermo King's new remote evaporators. Spectrum units purchased without these evaporators may not achieve the greater cooling capacities listed.
