A new untethered trailer tracking system from Aether Systems lowers communications costs over its satellite network by only sending reports when it detects pre-determined events or exceptions. Called GeoLogic, the monitoring and asset-management system is currently being installed by U.S. Xpress Enterprises' entire fleet of 12,000 trailers, according to Aether.
The onboard hardware for GeoLogic mounts in a trailer roof and can run for 30 days or more on its batteries, which recharge when the trailer is hooked to tractor power. The unit is programmed over the air via a dispatch pack, which includes all movement points, tractor assignments, authorized door openings and other activities tied to specific “geofence” locations.
It then monitors trailer activity based on that information, sending wireless alerts based on detecting planned and unplanned events. The system can also be polled remotely for a trailer present location or set to send reports on a scheduled basis.
The exception-based system offers the full national coverage of satellite network, but avoids high wireless costs.
GeoLogic is also designed for full integration with fleet dispatch systems and other back-office applications, Aether says.
